History
The word ‘Azamgarh’ has been derived from two words ‘Azam’ and ‘Garh’. The word ‘Azam’ connotes the name of the founder Raja (king) of the city, Azam Khan and the word ‘Garh’ means a Fort or a Castle. One of his decedents Vikarmajeet embraced Islam, and had two sons named Azam Khan and Azmat Khan. Azam Khan laid down the foundation of Azamgarh after his name. Azamgarh is situated on the bank of Tamsa River (Tons).
Azamgarh was established in 1665 during the Mughal period. On 18th December, 1832 it became a District and Sir Thomson was appointed the first Collector of the newly created District “Azamgarh”. The British had two base camps; firstly, Diwani Court and secondly was Wesley School. In 1832, the civil court was built on place of the ancestral house and stables of Sidhari ke Babu. In the beginning the Civil Courts were administering justice under the control and supervision of the District Judge of Varanasi. In 1856-57 a District Judge in Azamgarh was appointed. On 15th November, 1994 Azamgarh became a Commissionary. It consists of the districts Azamgarh, Mau and Ballia.
District Azamgarh consists 8 Tehsils i.e. Sadar, Budhanpur, Sagri, Lalganj,Martinganj, Mehnagar, Nizamabad, Phoolpur and 26 Police Stations i.e. Ahiraula, Atrauliya, Bardah, Bilariyaganj, Didarganj, Deogaon, Gambhirpur, Jahanaganj, Jiyanpur, Kandharapur, Kaptanganj, Kotwali, Maharajganj, Mehnagar, Mehnajpur, Mahila thana, Mubarakpur, Nizamabad, Pawai, Phoolpur, Raunapaar, Rani ki sarai, Sidhari, Saraimir, Tehbarpur, Tarwa.
Judicial System of District Court Azamgarh –
Presently, total sanctioned strength of District Courts is 59 consisting a District Judge court and 18 courts of A.D.J. cadre, 08 courts of Senior Division cadre and 32 courts of Junior Division cadre. Apart from that, four Gram Nyayalayas viz, Budhanpur, Lalganj, Menhnagar, Phoolpur have also been notified.
The establishment of Family Court has been made independent and for the purpose of the same post of the Principal Judge, Family Court, has been upgraded to the rank of District Judge vide order dated June 12, 2020 of the Hon’ble High Court Allahabad. Currently, Principal Judge, Family Court, and three other Additional Principal Judge Family Courts are also functional.
An independent court of Motor Accidents Claims Tribunal (MACT) is also functional from June 30, 2021, in which the Presiding Officer, MACT is appointed of the rank of District Judge.
Advocate’s Bar of Azamgarh –
Originally an association of Bar in the collectorate court at Azamgarh was formed in the beginning of 1915 just after passing the Indian Companies Act (Act No. 71 of 1913). The association is registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 (Act No. XXI of 1860) since September 19, 1953.
